Via The Temple News - Many of our posts at Facebook Observer have reflected the exponential levels of popularity that Facebook has gained among college & school students.
Jessica Taylor’s recent article in The Temple News is another evidence of that. From what we understand, Facebook is just going up and up when it comes to usage and popularity. Jessica has listed 10 most popular Facebook groups amongst Temple University students in reverse order.
Rank 1: You Know You Go To Temple If…: 3,523 members
This group was created in September 2006 by sophomore Jewish studies, criminal justice and Hebrew triple major Jon Desantis. It highlights the likes and dislikes of Temple students.
Rank 2: Temple University: 3,468 members
It was created by management major Jordan Hinsch in September 2004 and started growing in the fall of 2005 session. According to Hinsch, “People post questions and forums about things such as housing, classes, lost and found, etc.”
Rank 3: Wawa Lovers Club of TU: 2,046 members
This group was created by marketing major Bradley Schleyer when he desided a Wawa hoagie. According to Schleyer, “When I arrived on campus freshman year, I found 7-Eleven without any problem”.”Sure enough, there was no Wawa. I made the group to unite other students who were feeling the same way I was.”
All in all Jessica’s article include 10 groups. Do check em” out here.

The Public Library of Science (PLoS, pronounced to rhyme with ‘floss’) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making science and medical literature freely available to the world. The group rightly assumed that this offer would appeal to the college crowd — after all, it has the word ‘free’ in it — and started a Facebook group.
In addition to offering free access to top scientific and medical studies, the group allows users to submit their own work: a great opportunity for grad students who believe in open access and have papers they’d like to see published. You retain your copyright under a Creative Commons license.
ThePLoS group offers more than free reading materials. It also offers users tangible ways to get involved in the political side of science (for actual political science you’ll have to go elsewhere). Regular updates urge users to contact local and national politicians about a number of issues, ranging from the proposed NiH bill (which would give taxpayers access to all publicly-funded NiH research, a no-brainer if you ask me) to boycotting the Association of American Publishers for their condemnation of open access programs.
The group also monitors open access news and progress for its readers. Did you know there’s a revolution happening in the publishing world? Newspapers especially are having a tough time adapting to the internet age. The PLoS knew, and they’ve got links to articles discussing new models for print media, debating the benefits of online subscription access versus larger revenues from ad traffic on free access sites, and more.
If all this sounds boring, you’re not paying attention. Remember the recent revelation that hormone therapy (often used to “treat” menopause) probably causes breast cancer? How many women in your family had to go through chemo because their doctors recommended a carcinogenic drug? Imagine if you had access to every health study you pay for.
The PLoS is also hosting an event, complete with Facebook page: the 2nd North Carolina Science Blogging Conference. The event is, of course, free and open to the public.
And, of course, the PLoS offers that all-important staple of any good internet group: the blog debate, open to anyone with a keyboard and a will to rant. Which basically means everyone.
October 2nd, 2007 — Facebook Commentary, Facebook Groups, Facebook Applications
via Mashable - Lookabee is an ‘in beta’ application for Facebook - that makes so much sense it is sure to be a hit. The basic idea behind the application is to provide a platform for teachers to keep in touch with their students by posting shared files, feedback on assignments, homework, extra help etc.
This will not only provide students and teachers an alternative and easy way to collaborate, but it will also solve the age old problem of letting parents know exactly what is going on in the classroom, areas they can help when needed and a facility to check up on progress.
These types of collaborative solutions have been implemented at many schools (are are standard in most private academic settings) but there has never really been a facility to bring this level of communication to the overall public school system. Facebook seems like a perfect platform for it - and with the announcement that Facebook is soon to allow contact grouping and privacy controls per group, the students will be more likely to use a tool like Lookabee, having not to worry about those ‘compromising’ party pictures being available to there homeroom teacher.
If you are a high school or university teacher in North American and want to participate in the beta program, you can sign up here.

Retailer Has Set-up Facebook Group to Promote Back to School
Walmart does not always do everything right, but you have to admire their willingness to try out bleeding edge marketing initiatives to drive sales. With the launch of their Roommate Style Match group on Facebook, Walmart is hoping to leverage the legions of college aged Facebook users to drive sales during the back to school season.
The premise behind the Facebook group is simple; members of the group can take a quiz that will give them their decorating style and get a list of recommend products based that will flow well with their style and that of their roommate. From there they can print out a list of products to buy at a local Walmart. Short, simple, and potentially financially sweet.
