Clever Hippo Makes It Easier to Find Cool Facebook Applications

One of Facebook’s weakest features is their search. It is klunky, and even with it’s recent refinement, it still does not always return the best results. And you can forget about getting any advanced functionality to get granular with your searches. Clever Hippo wants to help you with this; at least in terms of searching for Facebook applications.

The first thing that structure me about this application was it’s design. Clever Hippo features a slick user interface design that is visually appealing (and easy to use). Clever Hippo works by performing a crawl of the Facebook application directory, indexing and prioritizing all relevant application meta-data. This process yields a richer data set than a search that just includes the application summary.

With Clever Hippo you can refine your search results by a number of different attributes; Daily Active Users, Percent Active, Most Recent Application and get very granular by using advanced search techniques such as OR, NOT, wild-card, or boost queries. Once you have found the application(s) you were looking for, you can view the application’s screenshot on the search result page. If this was not enough, Clever Hippo shows you which search terms are popular and provide a ranking of the most popular search terms - useful for Facebook developers who are looking for ideas on what application they should build next.

While I think this is an awesomely useful application, it seems like one of those applications that will eventually be rendered useless by a Facebook developed solution. Until then though, if you are frustrated with the current Facebook search capabilities, check out the Clever Hippo.
