Rebtel Offers Long Distance Calling At Local Rates
VoIP service provider Rebtel has released a Facebook application that allows users to call their friends, family, and business colleagues to make low cost calls. The Rebtel Facebook applications also allows users to create local numbers for global friends, straight from your Facebook. Facebook contacts can also instantly create a local number for you.
What is interesting about this application is not that it allows Facebook users to make low-cost calls, is that it is one of only two VoIP applications for Facebook. In an industry that is hurting from high customer acquisition costs, it is a wonder why more VoIP providers have not already created a Facebook application.

Hi,
I’ve been working with the application here at Rebtel and I’ve been bemused that there aren’t more apps like this. It feels like the space is getting more crowded and that there should pop up more of them.
What did you like about it? Do you think we should add any additional features, are you lacking anything?
Take care!
Linus
Linus, the first thing I like was the fact that you were out on the bleeding edge. I respect companies that are not afraid to try something new and nimble enough to see and take advantage of the opportunity Facebook presents.
In terms of actual interaction with your app, I don’t have a ton, so I will check it out this weekend and let you know after that.
Like Linus I was involved with bringing this app to life. Albeit that my perspective is more “social media” than “coding”. There is a strong social media user base within Rebtel, and the thought was that we wanted to be where our users are.
Yeah, it was very much a joint effort over at Rebtel to try and get this out (while keeping quality up! facebook applications that don’t work are the most annoying things). I’m pretty happy that we’ve managed to get it up and running so quickly.
I find that as a social tool that facebook is, the app fits my way of using it perfectly. I don’t really connect with people I don’t know, and I use the Reb Me app to get in touch more easily with people I know.
Tc!

Hey,
Do join our Facebook group if you have some input on how we should develop this further!

Garrett, I’m not sure what the other VOIP application for Facebook is (you refer to two), but I would mention that back in June I posted about two Facebook apps for VoIP, one from VoIPUser.org and the other for Skype:

There are also a bunch of “voip” apps that are *internal* to Facebook, i.e. they allow 2-way voice communication between Facebook users. I listed a number of them here:

I like the new blog, by the way - great stuff!
