Facebook goes mobile

After the flurry over the new iPhones, the rising popularity of the Facebook Mobile application was inevitable.

Facebook Mobile allows you to upload photos and videos from your phone straight to Facebook, which is important when you need to share the dimly-lit pictures you took at the Spoon concert last night (”that shadowy figure? That’s Britt Daniel! No, I swear! Oh he is too too dreamy”), or the ten second video of your niece drooling on herself in a really adorable way.

Or, of course, you could use it for work. Say you’re at a conference, and your company is using Facebook to market products to the young, and you’ve just spotted the next big thing on the tradeshow floor: snap a photo and you’ve got instant Facebook marketing.

You can also use the mobile application to surf the web from your phone by visiting m.facebook.com. Or get text messages sent to your phone when you have updates, friend requests, etc. Just in case you’re the kind who can’t leave Facebook behind for more than an hour or two. (If so, you might need to check this out.)

My favorite part about this, though, is that it doesn’t exclude those who, like me, are still operating a Stone Age cell phone so old that when you lose it on the subway people actually return it to you because it’s not worth stealing. You just add the application to check out the pics and vids your friends have added to their profiles.

This also helps my hipster quotient. I get a lot of people who breezily offer to send me a picture of whatever we’re talking about directly from their phone to mine, and I have to tell them that my phone does not have such an advanced ability as picture-receiving. Heck, I only just enabled text messaging. Now, I can just tell them “Oh, you should just put it up on Facebook. What do you mean, you don’t have a Facebook account? I thought everyone had one of those now.” And then, see, I am back in the cool. All thanks to Facebook Mobile.

Wow, people upload pictures from their phone to Facebook? What resolution are good phones supporting now, 1.3M? All I can say to that is wow. Are we going back in time? I there were 5M to 10M camera’s that could connect to Facebook and upload photos, then I would be impressed, other than that, I am just depressed.
