Will Users Prefer a 1.0 Social Networking Site?
Like many my age I moved home after I graduated college. Most of my friends moved away seeking greener pastures in the “big cities”, while those who stayed could not afford their own place. Like my friends and I, College.com is hoping that students will leave Facebook 2.0 and come home to a platform that is similar to what Facebook use to be; a place for college age kids to connect. I am not sold on College.com’s power to migrate users from Facebook.
As I have stated before, “a social network is a social network” with the only difference between one another being the number of influencers and sneezers that are actively using the platform - driving the hype, buzz and membership of the network.
Why would someone want to leave Facebook for College.com?
According to TechCrunch’s NickGonzalez, “The bigger difference (from Facebook) comes with their school specific features. Like Facebook used to support, College.com lets you find and post your class schedule to your profile. To aid with college life, they’ve also included specialized profiles for professors and the Greek system. Professor profiles are listed in a school-specific directory, allowing you to read bios and rate them. The Greek system features profiles for Fraternities and Sororities on campus, with the ability to rush or list new organizations.”
While these certainly unique features that might entice some, are they truly enough to make a dent in Facebook’s explosive growth? I think not. College students are not leaving Facebook; they are using Facebook even more now that there are thousands of ways to waste their ideal time on the platform. If you are a social network looking to bring users from Facebook to your network try being what Facebook will be in a year, not what is was two years ago.

Two years ago, how much spam was there on Facebook? I prefer less spam. With a social networking site being open to everyone, it begins to smell like a dirty armpit. Sometimes, less is more.
I actually prefer the setup that College.com currently has. Although FB has a ton of users, I find myself constantly feeling out of the loop with all the new apps. I think College.com will one day be preferred by College Students.
