What is Proper Profile Posting Etiquette?
As my Facebook friend’s list expands and I get more and more “Facebook Rockstars” for friends, I have noticed that my news feed is filled with what I refer to as Facebook News Feed SPAM.
What is Facebook News Feed SPAM?
Facebook News Feed SPAM is when a Facebook user “abuses” the Facebook News Feed functionality by posting or linking multiple items per day.
What Do I Consider Abuse?
Well, it depends, but if you are posting or linking to more than a handful of stories per day of which the majority are your own (from your blog website, etc.) then I would say that you are abusing the functionality.
Why Are Facebook Users Spamming the Facebook News Feed?
It is pretty simple. It is the easiest (and most effective) way to get your message, post, link, etc out to all of your Facebook friends, and the more one sees your name, the more ingrained it becomes in their mind and in turn one is more likely to become “known” so it works just like advertising.
Can Anything Be Done to Stop the SPAMMERS?
Yes. One, you can drop the Facebook friend who is SPAMMING your feed, but you might need them one day, right? Second, you can edit your Facebook News Feed preferences, but this is a bit of a hassle and might actually hinder important news from getting through that you might actual want to see.
Hopefully, as the Facebook platform evolves Facebook will build in some sort of SPAM protection, limiting or filtering what can/can’t be pushed to the news feed. For now, however, the era of the Facebook SPAMMER has just began. Facebook users beware!
