How I Use Facebook - Chris Brogan

Chris Brogan Is A Social Media Thought Leader

chris broganIf you have never heard of Chris Brogan, you probably don’t know much about social media. Chris is one of social media’s premier thought leaders. Chris does not just talk the talk, he also walks the walk. Simply put, he know his stuff. So for those of you don’t know Chris, check out Chris’ blog and make sure to subscribe to his RSS Feed after reading this interview. Trust me, you will be glad you did.

Chris, tell everyone at home who you are and what you do.

I’m Chris Brogan and I am a social media expert. I use this to build conferences like PodCamp (a free unconference) and Video on the Net ( a paid conference). I make media of various types, and build relationships between humans.

So, what’s your Facebook strategy?

I use Facebook to extend awareness and context around the media I make. I don’t make Facebook a destination. I make it a place that people can find more about me, and hopefully come to MY place, which is my website, [chrisbrogan.com]

Is Facebook Your Preferred Social Network?

No. I like Facebook, but I prefer Twitter.

Why do you prefer Twitter to Facebook?

It’s lightweight. I like that I can use it on the web, my phone, an IM client, or a 3rd party app. I like Facebook, too, but if I had to pick one or the other, hello Twitter.

Even though it is not your preferred social network, how long have you been using Facebook?

I’ve only been on for a few months. I came when all the tech geeks showed up.

How much time do you spend Facebooking?

I spend less than an hour. My boss, Jeff Pulver, practically LIVES on Facebook.

When you do use Facebook, what do you do?

I use Facebook for messaging, for consuming other people’s media, like videos and blogs through my Blog Friends app, and I use it to learn more about the people I follow in this space. You learn a lot about someone from what apps they choose and what groups they belong to, don’t you agree?

I certainly do learn a lot about my friends, clients and business partners from which applications they use and what groups they belong to, in fact that is one of the primary reason I use Facebook – relationship development.

Help us learn more about you Chris and tell us what your five favorite Facebook applications are.

We know what you like to do on Facebook Chris, but what do you like the most about Facebook?

I like the crowd, and that there’s lots of energy. I like the News stream.

What Do You Not Like About Facebook?

Let me group my friends the way *I* want, and in more than one way, and make it easier for me to move data OUT of Facebook into RSS.

I know advanced friend grouping functionality is coming soon and it would be nice to move data out of Facebook, but I don’t see them opening up like that anytime soon.

Speaking of what’s coming next, what does the future hold for Facebook?

More ways to open the platform for more use. I think they’ll probably add some other sticky features or incorporate more of the better apps to make Facebook more usable for power users, businesses, and others not seeking to bite chumps.

Nice to read about how someone else uses face book. I’d like to read interviews of more users to get turned on to more possibilities of how to use it. Maybe interview Pulver?

Chris, t what point does facebook lose most of its value if you can’t get the data out? I know that’s your main beef with it right now, so at what point do you say screw ‘em and move on? Only when something else better comes along?

Johnny:

I have a bunch more interviews prepared. I sent out a request to Jeff and he is working to get sometime to do the interview, but he is a busy man!

I will keep pushing to get him to do the interview, though, and hopefully have one up with him in the coming weeks.

@Travis - I think Facebook is still evolving. If I give them about six months to set my contact list free, and they STILL don’t give me a good solution, then I might move on. Who knows?

@Chris - thanks for the response.

I’ll be especially interested to see how they make it more useful to the “business” crowd.

@Travis - I have to believe that Facebook will end up taking the most successful third party applications and absorbing them or putting out their own versions.

I consider any of the applications that mimmick LinkedIn type functionality to be prime targets.

I like Facebook because of the group aspect (communication just with them) alongside the newsfeed of my friends who aren’t a part of my group. It is all encompassing. Clean look and feel. Inclusion of many different media type to reach out and communicate. It’s great.
