2/3 of Facebook Users Interact With Facebook Applications

Over 14 Million Users Interacted With a Facebook Application In August

Forget the buzz. Forget the traffic. Let’s talk about the interaction between users and the Facebook application. Compete.com has released some outstanding Facebook site analytics that shows 2/3 of all Facebook users interacting with a Facebook application in the month of August. That is right, almost 14 million users interacted with a Facebook application - a staggering number.

What Else Are Facebook Users Doing?

Facebook users are doing more then just interacting with applications.

  • 21 Million Users Interact With Their Friends Profiles. They stay for almost 4:15 per page.
  • 16 Million Users Browse Photos
  • 8 Million Users Join or Visit Groups
  • 6.5 Million Users Search or Browse For Users
  • 5 Million Users Join or Browse a Network
  • 2.5 Million Read Discussion Boards
  • 1.3 Million Users Browse the Marketplace
  • 800,000 Users Poke Someone

Facebook Applications the Most “Sticky”

In web terms sticky refers to how well a site is a keeping a user on the site. The more time spent, the more “sticky” it is said to be. Of all of the things that Facebook users are doing, Facebook applications are the most sticky aspect of the site. Besides Facebook applications, the majority of Facebook users are only using the platform to browse friend’s profiles. Prior to opening up their platform for third party development, according to the Compete.com data, most users were not doing much beyond “stalking” their friends - not exactly enough there to continue to keep users engaged.

With the addition of Facebook applications, users are now spending more time with them than with any other aspect of the site. This type of stickiness bodes well for Facebook application developers and companies leveraging a Facebook application to market their product/service. It also puts an exclamation point on Facebook’s decision to open their platform for development and data like this will definitely be influential on other social networks deciding to opening their platform to third party developers.
