Facebook Could be Exposed as a Fad According to Microsoft CEO

Via Times Online According to Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, craze for social networking phenomenons like Facebook risks being exposed as a “fad”, a comment which is in stark contrast to earlier news reports speculating Microsoft stake in Facebook.

Mr. Ballmer told Times Online, “I think these things [social networks] are going to have some legs, and yet there’s a faddishness, a faddish nature about anything that basically appeals to younger people”.

Although he did not comment on Microsoft’s talks with Facebook but did give his thoughts on the Facebook’s brand value and its “network & community” effects.

He also pointed out that websites like Geocities, an old online community was taken over by Yahoo for $3 million, during the dot-com boom days and “had most of what Facebook was”. Microsoft has been in talks to acquire 5% stake in Facebook, a deal valued at $500 million.

Social networks are fads. The Internet is a fad. Geocities was a fad, but what makes Facebook different from every other social network is it has endless possibilities. Make and join groups, add applications which benefits you as a user, and have one of the easiest navigational network on the web today.

What makes everything a fad is it gets boring and doesn’t move forward with new innovations. Facebook is not going to stand still. The fbFund is a great example how Facebook will move forward and will continue to move forward with changing times.

I believe Facebook is Web 2.0. Nothing is easier than logging into Facebook and checking your messages and seeing what your friends are up to within a minute of logging in. Add new applications like shopping and new messaging techniques on Facebook will make every user stay with Facebook.

Facebook will do fine for years to come, but that’s if they want to….
