Dan Farber has compared Marc Andreessen with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. It is the story of two Mark/c(s) one with a “c” and one with a “k”. Apparently, the similarity doesn’t end here.
The first common aspect is age. Both the co-founders seem to be enjoying 23rd year of their life.[edit: Mark Zuckerberg has generated lot of attention at the age of 23. Andressen started Netscape at 23].
Marc’s company Netscape lost out to Internet explorer and was ultimately sold to AOL for a $4.2 billion massive deal. Later on Andreessen formed Loudcloud, and Ning and also ventured into Opsware.
However, it ends there only. There is no IE clone competing with Facebook, no social networking giant on the scene. Facebook is quite wealthy in terms of funding at $240 million from Microsoft and has been quite calculative in its strategy.
Dan Farber’s post on Zdnet blog is running a poll to find out the fate of Facebook. Currently 56% voters have weighed in favor of Facebook going the Netscape way.

Isn’t Mark Z. 23 right now? So how could he have started the site when he was 23 when the site has been around for 4 years?
Andrew - Thanks for pointing out. Corrected
No problem. I just think it’s even more amazing that Mark Zuckerberg started facebook when he was 18 or 19.
