Facebook Enables Public Search Listings

The Once Closed Platform is Quickly Becoming Very Open

Remember when you had to be a college student in order to use Facebook? Ah, the good ‘ole days.

Now anyone can join Facebook and soon anyone will be able to view your “public” profile listing via the Facebook home page and even through Google. According to the message I received this morning when I logged into my Facebook account, people can now search for this listing from Facebook’s Welcome page. In a few weeks, it may also be found through search engines like Google.

Public Listings Signal Another New Phase For Facebook

The further opening up of the network by Facebook is a signal that Facebook A) wants to move down-stream from their current user-base hoping to drive further adoption of the platform by those typically found on MySpace, B) an attempt to increase traffic and page views through leveraging Google, Yahoo! and MSN search traffic, C) a combination of both. As Facebook continues to evolve at such a rapid pace, I wonder at what point Facebook of late 2006 - early 2007 no longer becomes recognizable?
