Facebook Lactivists Milking It For All It’s Worth

Banning of Breast Feeding Pictures Fuels Lactivist Out-Cry

For those who have not yet heard, Facebook has been banning pictures of babies breast feeding stating that they are “obscene”. This in turn created quite stir within the lactivist community. First off, I have to start this by saying I do not care whether someone breast feeds their child or not. It is your kid…feed them however you best see fit. What I do find odd about this whole situation, though, is the “cult-like” obsession with taking pictures (and videos) of women breast feeding. Maybe it is the fact that I am not a mom (or a woman), but what exactly is the point of taking pictures of women breast feeding? If anything I would think that you would not want to expose that body part to the rest of the world.

Oppression or Protection?

The removing of the pictures really does not come down to them being obscene - that is a generic term that the Facebook legal team stuck in to keep Facebook from getting slapped down in a legal battle and yes, they have a point that there are much more graphic (obscene) pictures on Facebook. The removing of the pictures probably has more to do with protecting the women (and their children) from the pedophiles, creepo’s, weirdo’s and college kids who get off to those sorts of pictures. Yes it is sick, but it is the truth. They are out there.

While lactivists are rallying around the battle cry of Facebook “pulling a MySpace” let’s hope that in doing so, Facebook is preventing some of the deplorable actions that have occurred as results of those predators who have used social networks like MySpace to act out on their desires. As an aside, why don’t the lactivist’s start their own social network? With all of the tools that are currently available, surely they would be able to easily pull this off? Is this really about the banning of photo’s or a clever way to get their voice heard to push an agenda?

[…] Facebook Observer kind of misses the point, asking “why don’t the lactivist’s[sic] start their own social network?” Because breastfeeding is nothing to be ashamed of or protected from. That’s why so many states have established laws stating that women have a right to breastfeed anywhere women otherwise have the right to be - because women shouldn’t have to close themselves off from the world and pretend that babies get fed through some kind of invisible magic.
