Facebook Not As Popular in Asia, Europe

While Popularity Soars Stateside, it is Stale Oversea’s

Facebook might be the fastest growing social networking site in the US, but the site has considerable ground to cover if it wants to catch-up with site such as Friendster, according to a ComScore report. Even with 270% growth from June of 2006 to June of 2007, only 17% of the sites 52.2 million visitors come from Europe and only 7% come from Asia.

“A fundamental aspect of the success of social networking sites is cultural relevance,” continued Mr. Ivins. “Those doing well in certain regions are likely doing an effective job of communicating appropriately with those regions’ specific populations. As social networking continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see if networks are able to cross cultural barriers and bring people from different corners of the globe together in fulfilling the truest ideals of social networking.”

Facebook’s US college and university roots certainly has something to do with it’s under-performance overseas. One has to imagine, though, that as more and more abandon social networks such as MySpace and Friendster in favor of the next big thing (Facebook) the number of European and Asian visitors to the site will dramatically increase. If not, might we be seeing the true ethnic diversification of social network usage?
