Facebook Traffic Is Not About to Plummet

Dip In Traffic Is Temporary

Quite a stir was caused by an Om Malik post that we covered early today about a September Comscore report that showed a 9.3% decline in Facebook traffic. Truth be told, the dip in traffic seems to be seasonal, as the same thing happened to Facebook’s traffic last year at this time. While some might not believe that the traffic dip is due to the start of the college season, I tend to side with those who attribute the dip to this event.

It makes a ton of sense to me that Facebook traffic rises six to eight weeks prior to the start of school as students prepare themselves to for back-to-school by reconnecting with friends after a few months away, then dips as school starts and students are focused on drinking (err…classes). For those of you who think this is a signal that the Facebook bubble is about to burst, look no further than MySpace to find that their traffic also dipped in September, giving more clout to the notion that back-tschool had an adverse effect on social network traffic.
