Keeping Up With the Jones’
If your parents were anything like mine when you were a kid, you know about “keeping up with the Jones’”. You see when I was younger I always wanted to the coolest sneakers, the most expensive pair of jeans and the biggest TV money could buy. Although, my parent hardly ever gave into my requests to compete with my friends in the game of how is the the richest, their stead fast approach taught me a great lessen about being the second kid on the block with whatever the latest and greatest is at the time.
Getting the less expensive, more feature rich version of the original. A lesson that Facebook will learn with the new release of MySpace’s new developer platform. It is great to be first to the on the block with something. You get attention, praise and status, but it is only temporary. It eventually fades once the novelty wears off as one by one everyone else get’s what you have - and many times is it better than the original. Facebook was the first to open up to third parties and they have benefited greatly. Now developers have another choice in MySpace and the novelty of the Facebook developer platform will wear off. Chances are that is why Facebook is already moving to launch a iTunes competitor.
Expect the MySpace developer platform to be one that capitalizes on the mistakes and misses of the Facebok platform. Expect application development to move at a much more rapid pace as Facebook developers port their pre-existing applications over to MySpace in order to grow and protect their budding new businesses. With the R&D already done, it would not be shocking to see 5,000 MySpace applications inside of the firs two months.
Sure their will be problems and short-comings with the platform - in life their always are. But for the Jones’ like Facebook who stake their claim to fame on being the “only one” the problems of their competitors create compound problems themselves, for they are no longer the only game and town and are now force to once again pave the expensive path to the next novelty that will keep their rep up. So here is to the Jones in town…keep on keepin’ on.
